The Homeowner’s Guide to Concrete Flatwork: Patios, Walkways, and More

If you’ve been looking into upgrading your property’s exterior, you’ve likely come across the term "flatwork." While it sounds like industry jargon, it’s actually one of the most common and essential types of concrete work you’ll encounter as a homeowner.

Whether you’re dreaming of a summer-ready backyard patio, a safe walkway for the kids, or a heavy-duty pad for a new hot tub, understanding the fundamentals of concrete flatwork will help you make informed decisions. At Tor Contracting Inc., we’ve spent years perfecting the art of the pour across Simcoe and Dufferin County. In this guide, we’re breaking down what flatwork really is, why the technical details matter, and how to spot high-quality workmanship.

What Exactly is Concrete Flatwork?

In the construction world, "flatwork" refers to any poured concrete surface that is installed along a horizontal plane. Unlike walls or foundations (which are vertical or structural), flatwork is all about creating durable, usable surfaces for walking, driving, or supporting equipment.

Common examples of concrete flatwork include:

  • Walkways and Sidewalks: Providing safe, mud-free paths around your home.

  • Patios: Creating an "outdoor room" for entertaining.

  • Porches: Serving as the durable entryway to your residence.

  • Shed and Hot Tub Pads: Specialized structural slabs designed to hold significant weight without shifting.

  • Driveways: High-traffic surfaces that require specific thickness and reinforcement.

The Science of the "Pitch": Why Drainage is King

One of the biggest mistakes a DIYer or an inexperienced contractor can make is pouring concrete that is perfectly level. While "level" sounds good in theory, in reality, a flat surface is a recipe for standing water.

In Ontario, where we deal with heavy rains and freeze-thaw cycles, "pitch" (or slope) is the most critical element of your drainage strategy.

The 2% Rule

Professional concrete flatwork is designed with a subtle slope: typically about 1/8" to 1/4" per foot: directed away from your home’s foundation. This ensures that:

  1. Foundation Protection: Water doesn't pool against your basement walls, which prevents waterproofing issues.

  2. Safety: It prevents "mini-ponds" from forming, which turn into dangerous ice patches during the winter.

  3. Longevity: Standing water can seep into the pores of the concrete, causing surface scaling or "spalling" when it freezes.

Quality Markers: The Importance of Control Joints

Concrete is an incredibly strong material, but it has one guarantee: it will shrink as it cures, and it will expand and contract with the temperature. If you don't give it a place to move, it will create its own random, jagged cracks across your beautiful new patio.

This is where control joints come in. These are the straight lines you see cut or grooved into the surface of a sidewalk or driveway.

Think of control joints as "planned cracks." By cutting a groove roughly 1/4 of the way through the slab’s thickness, we create a weakened plane. When the concrete naturally stresses, it cracks neatly at the bottom of the joint where you can't see it, rather than spider-webbing across the middle of your walkway. A project without properly spaced control joints is a project that won't look good for long.

Case Study: The Barrie Apartment Refresh

Flatwork isn't just for backyards; it’s essential for commercial property maintenance and safety. In October 2025, the Tor Contracting team completed a significant Concrete Refresh project for an apartment building in Barrie.

The project involved the demolition of old, crumbling sidewalks and the excavation of a new sub-base. For high-traffic residential buildings, the flatwork has to be more than just pretty: it has to be accessible and built to withstand constant foot traffic and salt applications. By focusing on a solid gravel base and precise joint placement, we provided the building with a "refresh" that will last for decades.

Specialized Pads: Sheds and Hot Tubs

If you are planning to install a hot tub or a large garden shed, a standard 4-inch pour might not be enough. These are often referred to as structural slabs.

A hot tub, when filled with water and people, can weigh several thousand pounds. If your concrete flatwork isn't reinforced with rebar or a thickened edge, the weight can cause the slab to tilt or crack. When we install hot tub pads, we ensure the sub-base is compacted perfectly to prevent "settling," which is the leading cause of out-of-level tubs and equipment damage.

Why Professional Concrete Work Matters

It can be tempting to try and pour a small walkway yourself, but concrete is an unforgiving medium. You have a very short "working window" once the truck arrives. If the site prep isn't right, the pitch is off, or the finishing isn't timed correctly, you're left with a permanent and expensive mistake.

At Tor Contracting Inc., we provide a comprehensive approach. Because we also offer excavating and bin rentals, we handle the entire lifecycle of your project:

  1. Demolition & Removal: We tear out the old asphalt or cracked concrete and haul it away in our own bins.

  2. Site Prep: We excavate and install a compacted gravel base (crucial for preventing frost heave).

  3. Forming & Pouring: We set the forms with the correct pitch and pour high-strength concrete.

  4. Finishing: We apply the desired texture (like a broom finish for slip resistance) and cut precise control joints.
